There could be literal gold in them there hills! If something looks vintage or designer, ask a family member if they have any idea where it could be from.
In addition to that, we recommend finding any prior appraisal documents that go along with it. It’s not necessary, but it will help our certified jewelry appraisers get an idea of where it came from. Clean Your Jewelry and Determine if it Needs to be Restored.
A major determining factor when you sell gold and diamond jewelry is the condition it is in. You may want to restore broken or damaged jewelry, but it will likely only be valued at what the raw materials are worth. Well-preserved pieces will always be worth a lot more!
There are times when the cost of restoration is a minor expense that is easily justified. There are others when a seemingly small problem caused the jewelry to be unrestorable. This isn’t a place where you want to do it yourself. Let an AGS certified jeweler take care of it or else you could spend more money than the piece is worth.
Jewelry looks best when it has been cleaned and polished. So be sure your pieces are cleaned before you show them around. Cline Jewelers happens to offer a jewelry cleaning service free of charge!

Our GIA Graduate & AGS certified gemologists will help guide you through the process from start to finish!
You may be asking, what exactly is an appraisal? It’s when you bring your piece of jewelry to a GIA Graduate and/or AGS certified gemologist to help you determine the worth of a piece of jewelry. There are two different kinds that Cline offers, the first is an informal appraisal, which is completely free! These are intended to let you know if the piece is valuable enough to be worth spending money on the next item, a formal appraisal.
A formal appraisal is a more thorough process that results in a formal document describing your jewelry with photos used for insurance purposes or assisting in the sale. We recommend updating your jewelry appraisals every three to five years. Appraisals typically take up to a week to complete. However, if time permits, an appraiser is more than happy to see if they can accommodate having them done sooner.
Appraisals are more important than people think. If something is misplaced, stolen, or damaged, your insurance company will refer to the jewelry appraisal document to settle the claim. If it is outdated, it will likely result in being underinsured, which could cost you thousands. Those diamond evaluations are imperative, so find a jewelry appraiser soon if you haven’t done it in a while!
Most places have an individual baseline price. However, the full amount will be determined by the complexity of your piece. This means how many gemstones it has, the type of metal, the intricacy of the design, etc.
